From 03 to 07 March 20254, in Sevilla (Spain), Dr Rosa M. Cuéllar-Franca from our LAURELIN project partner University of Manchester attended the “MATSUS Spring 2025 Conference: Sustainable Energy Materials and Circularity Symposium”. During this scientific high-level conference, Dr. Cuéllar-Franca presented her research under our EU-Japan funded project. This as she has been invited as guest speaker during one of the individual sessions.
The MATSUS Spring 2025 Meeting welcomed over 700 attendees, running over 30 parallel sessions all week. The Conference consists of a combination of symposia on basic and multidisciplinary science, and applied symposia focused on sustainable development areas.
Dr. Rosa Cuéllar-Franca has been selected as invited speaker during this conference. This to present her pitch entitled “Advancing Sustainable Innovations Through the Integration of Sustainability Metrics in Early Design Stages”
In her presentation, Dr. Cuéllar-Franca focused on the examples where life cycle assessment (LCA) was applied in early design stages to guide the sustainable development of carbon capture sorbents and CO₂ utilization systems. Additionally, she presented 2 case studies to the present audience.
The first case study evaluates the environmental impacts of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, an ionic liquid (IL), used as a post-combustion CO₂ capture solvent in a power plant with CCS. The second case study demonstrates the use of LCA to guide the design of a non-thermal plasma (NTP) reactor for CO₂ hydrogenation to methanol.
During her presentation, Dr. Cuéllar-Franca underlined that both case studies illustrate that addressing trade-offs early when designing solvents and catalysts applied to CCS&U technologies, can significantly enhance their environmental sustainability performance and drive innovation.
Dr. Rosa M. Cuéllar-Franca’s presentation enabled interesting conversations on the application of LCA as a design tool for developing materials focusing on climate change mitigation, e.g. catalysts. During her presentation, around 70 people gathered to learn more about her research and the LAURELIN project.
We thank our project partner Dr. Cuéllar-Franca very much for presenting the LAURELIN project in Sevilla!
