LAURELIN partner attends event on Public Perception and Business Models organised by the “Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) & Alternative Fuels CINEA cluster Projects”
On 14 November 2023, Raf Roelant, representative of LAURELIN’s project partner Process Design Center, attended in Brussels the event organised by the Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) & Alternative Fuels CINEA Cluster Projects.
The event, focussing on Public Perception and Business Models of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe funded projects in the field of CCUS & Alternative fuels, was perceived as very useful for the further developments & work of Raf and his colleagues at Process Design Center.
In the LAURELIN project, Raf and his colleagues from the Process Design Center are focussing on conceptual process design, cost estimation, and social life cycle assessment of the project’s results.
The event in Brussels gathered more than 50 stakeholders from more than 20 technical projects in the above-mentioned fields, constituting a truly valuable networking opportunity. The main goal of the event was to share best practices and knowledge about successful strategies for public perception studies and business model elaboration, challenges and outcomes of research and innovation projects.
Following presentations of several projects, new insights and key takeaways on public perception studies were discovered, useful for LAURELIN, most notably:
- Several studies on CCUS and renewable fuels are already reported in the literature, often based on large public surveys designed by specialized social scientists.
- Social media can be mined for public opinions on innovative sustainable developments.
- It is often more interesting to ask people to choose among several alternatives (sustainable or not), rather than to probe their approval of one alternative in particular. However, it is challenging to teach them the pros & cons of each choice without introducing bias.
The LAURELIN project was honoured to have Matthias Ólafsson, Chief EU representative for the Methanol Institute as their external stakeholder guest. This gave the opportunity for our project partner Raf to exchange views and insights with Mr. Ólafsson on the developments in the field of green methanol, and on how LAURELIN is contributing to a more sustainable production process of this renewable transport fuel.

The CCUS & Alternative Fuels Cluster is preparing a similar event on environmental LCA, which will take place online in March 2024. LAURELIN project partner PDC will again represent the LAURELIN project on the occasion, anticipating an equally fruitful exchange of ideas.
